Heavy Rain and Power Cuts: Flashlight First, Candles Second

Heavy rain is a regular part of the season, and the Thai Meteorological Department has warned of flash floods and run-off in Bangkok and nearby provinces through the week of 21 September. Storms like this can cut the power for hours. Before anything else, a straightforward piece of advice from a candle brand: reach for a flashlight first.

Why flashlights come first

Fire-safety and public-health guidance, including the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, says the same thing: during a power outage, use flashlights or other battery-powered lights instead of candles wherever you can. A candle is an open flame. It can tip over, and in a dark, stressful house it is easy to forget. The US National Candle Association, drawing on fire-protection figures, says more than 20% of fatal candle fires happen while the power is out.

If you do light a candle

  • Use a sturdy container. A wide, stable vessel is harder to knock over than a tall, narrow one.
  • Keep the area clear. Leave about 30 cm (12 in) between the flame and curtains, bedding, paper or anything else that can burn.
  • Use a heat-resistant surface, such as a ceramic plate or tray, never a soft or cluttered one.
  • Never leave it unattended. Put it out when you leave the room or go to sleep.
  • Keep it out of reach of children and pets, and do not carry a lit candle around the house.
  • Do not light any flame if you smell gas.

Fragrance can wait

Scented candles are made for ordinary evenings. During an outage, safety matters more than atmosphere. Save the ritual for when the lights are back on.

A small preparedness list

  • A flashlight or headlamp with spare batteries, or a rechargeable lamp charged ahead of time.
  • A power bank for your phone.
  • Lighters and matches stored out of children's reach.
